Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has announced the conclusion of his role leading President Donald Trump's cost-cutting task force, famously titled the Department of Government Efficiency, or Doge. In a candid post on his social media platform X, Musk expressed gratitude to Trump for the opportunity to contribute to federal efforts aimed at reducing wasteful government spending. As a "special government employee," Musk's time in this role was limited to 130 days annually, a quota he approached as the end of May neared.

Musk’s exit follows his public critique of Trump's signature budget proposal, which he referred to as a "big, beautiful bill." During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, he voiced his disappointment, particularly highlighting how the multi-trillion dollar tax breaks and increased defense spending could exacerbate the federal deficit.
