Trami's impact causes severe flooding, displacing thousands and leading to fatalities in both countries.
Tropical Storm Trami made landfall near Danang, Vietnam on Sunday, following its severe impact in the Philippines that resulted in the deaths of at least 80 people and injured numerous others. As the storm crossed the South China Sea, it maintained wind speeds of 55 miles per hour, which is below hurricane intensity, according to Vietnam's national meteorological agency.
In the Philippines, Trami led to significant flooding in several provinces, with over half a million individuals forced from their homes. The Philippine Office of Civil Defense reported the damage to nearly 28,000 houses and power interruptions affecting more than 150 cities and municipalities. Furthermore, the agency indicated that 34 individuals remained unaccounted for following the storm’s passage.
As Trami moved inland through Vietnam, authorities warned of potential flooding and coastal landslides, with some regions south of Danang expected to receive up to 16 inches of rain by Monday evening. Ahead of the storm, flight operations at four central Vietnamese airports, including Danang International Airport, were temporarily suspended before reopening on Sunday.
In addition to Trami, another tropical storm named Kong-rey was reported to be near the Philippines, with similar wind speeds. It is expected to approach Luzon, the most populous Philippine island, within the next few days and subsequently head toward Japan's Ryukyu Islands.
Previous storm activity in the region included Typhoon Yagi, which resulted in significant casualties in China and the Philippines before making landfall in Vietnam, where it claimed 49 lives as it progressed inland.
