U.S. Exempts Syrian Camp Contractor from Funding Freeze to Combat ISIS Resurgence

In a recent decision, the Trump administration has granted a temporary exemption to a U.S. contractor operating in Al Hol, a Syrian camp that houses approximately 39,000 ISIS members and their families. This move is crucial given the instability resulting from the Syrian civil war and the potential resurgence of ISIS following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad. The contractor, Proximity International, focuses on training local security forces to maintain law and order within the camp.

Following a stop-work order issued by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which halted all foreign aid programs for a 90-day review, Proximity International appealed for an exemption, stressing its importance in ensuring U.S. national security. Rubio reiterated the administration's stance that all funding must be assessed against criteria that prioritize American safety, strength, and prosperity.
