NEW YORK (AP) — A catastrophic incident occurred Sunday evening at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when an Air Canada jet collided with a fire truck, tragically resulting in the deaths of the two pilots aboard. Passengers recounted their harrowing escape as they faced the wreckage and risked their own safety to help fellow travelers.
With the smell of fuel permeating through the air, passengers bravely opened emergency doors and leapt from the aircraft, aiding those next to them who were injured. Clément Lelièvre, a passenger, stated, “Strangely enough, I wasn’t scared or panicked. Most of us were pretty aware of what happened.”
In total, approximately 40 passengers and crew members were transported to hospitals, but by Monday morning, many had already been released, with some walking away without any treatment required.
As investigations proceeded into the cause of this tragic event, stories of survival emerged, including that of a flight attendant who was found alive but injured outside the wreckage.
Lelièvre praised the pilots' quick response as they executed an emergency braking maneuver just moments before the collision, which he believes saved many lives.
Further insight into the tragic accident is being sought as investigators examine the coordination between air traffic and ground traffic at the busy airport, particularly given an earlier emergency involving another aircraft.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted that LaGuardia is adequately staffed but struggles with a shortage of air traffic controllers, echoing concerns about staffing levels across the nation’s airports. This incident highlights the critical need for effective communication and coordination in aviation safety.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation, and further information is awaited from the analysis of data recorders recovered from the aircraft.
LaGuardia Airport, already facing challenges amid a partial government shutdown causing lengthy delays, was completely disrupted following the accident.
As news of this tragic event continues to unfold, families of the deceased and the injured await answers about the mishap that took place in one of America's busiest airports.
