State of emergency declared as fast‑moving wildfire expands in British Columbia

A state of emergency has been declared after thousands of people were forced to flee their homes as a fast‑moving wild‑fire in a remote part of western Canada spread rapidly, doubling in size since it was first detected on Friday.

The Bald Range fire now covers more than 39 square miles (103 square km) across the Summerland, Peachland and neighboring districts, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

British Columbia Premier David Eby told a news conference that one fire official had likened the fire to “a bomb going off.” He noted that the flames were so intense that they created their own weather systems, producing lightning.

"Homes have been lost, and properties have been destroyed. Some people became trapped as conditions changed very quickly, and needed to be rescued," the premier said.

The state‑of‑emergency status gives the provincial government special powers, including travel restrictions and protections against price gouging, while enabling extra resources for rescue operations.

Summerland has a population of about 12,000 people; Peachland about 6,500 residents. The wildfire triggered the largest evacuation event of the summer, with more than 20,000 people across British Columbia forced to leave their homes.

The mayor of Summerland, Doug Holmes, said of the fire: "We have to brace ourselves for the worst."

Hundreds of residents in Summerland’s senior and care facilities were relocated to safer locations, according to Interior Health.

The nearby districts of Okanagan, Peachland, and Okanagan‑Similkameen issued evacuation orders and alerts in some areas. Residents with livestock faced challenges when taking horses and other animals to safety; some owners left gates open in hopes animals would find their way out.
