Former magazine columnist E Jean Carroll has asked a judge to order former President Donald Trump to pay her more than $5 million in damages, after a jury found him liable for sexual assault and defamation in 2023.
Carroll’s motion came a day after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review Trump’s attempt to overturn the verdict. The jury awarded her $5 million for the alleged assault that took place in the 1990s, plus additional damages for the president’s public denials on social media.
She says Trump has repeatedly delayed payment, citing each delay as a valid excuse. Her lawyers contend that these delays have been denied in full, and that the case should now be resolved, “it is time for him to pay.”
Trump continues to deny the allegations, calling the claim a lie on Truth Social and asserting that the case is a “weaponization and lawfare” effort. In a post on the platform, he said the Supreme Court had “declined to review” a fake case brought against him.
The lawsuit also includes a separate jury verdict from 2024 that found Trump liable for defamation and awarded Carroll nearly $84 million. Trump’s appeal of that decision was also rejected by a panel of federal judges last year.
Carroll’s legal team has included Trump’s recent social media posts in their filings, citing his continued public statements as evidence of ongoing defamation.
As the case moves forward, the question of enforcement becomes central: the award, with accrued interest, now totals almost $5.8 million.
