Found dead on September 10, 2025 while speaking on the campus of Utah Valley University, Kirk sparked an intense manhunt that led to the arrest of 23‑year‑old Tyler Robinson two days later.
Robinson faces aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice and witness tampering charges, with Utah County prosecutors seeking the death penalty.
The family released a statement on Monday, calling Kirk a beloved husband, father and friend, and thanked the community for its support while opting to keep further comments silent.
Defense attorneys tried to ban cameras from the courtroom and to suppress various evidence, and requested the court to remove the death‑penalty option before the hearing began.
