Court Hearing Unveils ‘Devastating’ Evidence Against Suspect in Charlie Kirk Killing
On Thursday, attorneys for the Utah County prosecutors presented a concise yet detailed outline of probable cause to try 23‑year‑old Tyler Robinson for murder of Charlie Kirk, a former Trump ally, on 10 September. The evidence hinged on combined forensic, surveillance and text‑message material that prosecutors described as “devastating.”
Chief Deputy Attorney Chad Grunander summarized four days of testimony, noting that Robinson’s DNA was found on a grandfather’s rifle and a towel wrapped in it, both recovered from an abandoned outdoor location on campus. Surveillance footage shows Robinson walking across the Utah Valley University campus, buying food at Chick‑Fil‑A and later making two trips to the rooftop of the Losee Center, from which Kirk was shot from 415 ft. of distance.
Robinson’s roommate and former partner, Lance Twiggs, was recorded in a video interview in which he described the suspect’s moves leading up to the shooting and later confession. Text messages between the two revealed Robinson’s ownership of the rifle, a confession to Kirk’s killing, and remorse expressed to Twiggs the day after the shooting. The messages also contain a “text confession” in which Robinson admitted to the murder and apologized, saying, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”
Defence counsel for Robinson challenged the admissibility of the evidence, citing possible questions of chain‑of‑custody, expert reliability and potential jury bias. Despite the firm objection, Judge Tony Graf sided with prosecutor cautions, stating, “Your Honour has heard four days of testimony now. The evidence is overwhelming. It’s devastating.”
Robinson appeared before the court clean‑shaven and in a light‑coloured suit, alongside his parents and brothers. The hearing attracted a packed audience, eventually drawing enough witnesses to occupy the 14 seats at the courthouse’s observation area. High‑profile figures, including Donald Trump Jr., were also present, underscoring the national scale of the case.
The case will advance to a full trial after both sides submit detailed written arguments. The next hearing is scheduled for 1 September. Meanwhile, the Kirk family has released a statement, emphasizing that “nothing will ever undo the loss of our beloved Charlie,” and calling for a transparent legal process grounded in truth.
