In brief

A recent wildfire on the Greek island of Crete has led to the evacuation of roughly 1,500 people, including around 1,200 tourists. Firefighters faced severe challenges due to strong winds and rugged terrain as they attempted to control the flames in the midst of a heat wave affecting much of southern Europe. Authorities, including coast guard personnel, swiftly moved to safeguard those in danger.

On Thursday, about 200 firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze, with their efforts hindered by gale-force winds that spread the flames rapidly. Vassilis Vathrakoyiannis, a spokesperson for Greece's fire service, noted the complexity of the firefighting operation. Ierapetra's mayor, Manolis Frangoulis, described the situation as chaotic, likening it to "hell on earth" due to the fire’s intense and unpredictable behavior. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities linked to the incident thus far.
