Hamas Names Khalil al-Hayya as New Leader Amid Internal Divide

Hamas has elected Khalil al‑Hayya to replace the slain Yahya Sinwar as its overall leader. The exiled commander, already heading the movement from Gaza, is seen as the most hardline voice in the group.

Sinwar was killed by Israeli forces in October 2024, leaving a leadership vacuum that split Hamas between those who want a more pragmatic political approach and those who oppose major concessions.

Hayya survived an Israeli air strike in Doha that killed five militants, including several of his sons, and was named leader after a two‑round election. In the first round the vote was inconclusive, but a runoff saw Hayya defeat former political bureau chief Khaled Meshaal.

The victory deepens a strategic divide: the hardline faction insists on keeping the weapons and demanding a political path to Palestinian statehood, while others call for a pause in confrontation and greater cooperation with mediators.

Since the ceasefire agreement last October, Hamas has been weakened by the loss of senior political and military personnel, damaged infrastructure, and ongoing Israeli attacks. The election reflects the group's struggle to rebuild and define its future strategy.
