Investigating Sudden Elephant Deaths in Kenya

Between June and July, 15 elephants were found dead outside the wildlife boundaries of Amboseli National Park. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) investigators traced cyanide—used as a pesticide—in stomach contents, suggesting that chemicals sprayed on nearby tomato farms may have exposed the animals to a lethal toxin.

KWS chief vet Dr Isaac Lekolool explained that while cyanide presence is clear, they cannot yet rule out intentional poisoning. The accidental theory gains traction because local farmers using pesticides might unknowingly contaminate the grass elephants feed on.

Farmers in Kimana, where most tomato plots lie, expressed surprise. "We have lived alongside wildlife for decades and never saw this happen," said landowner representative Daniel Nina. He noted that prior cases of poisoning on farms historically affected zebras and antelopes, not the large-bodied elephants.

Conservationists such as Paula Kahumbu, who has spent almost three decades protecting Kenya’s elephants, cautioned that the evidence is insufficient to confirm the pesticide theory. She highlighted that for a chemical to kill an elephant it must be ingested in large amounts—a scenario that appears unlikely given the limited quantities of pesticides farmers typically apply.

A 2024 assessment by the Route to Food initiative flagged illegal agrochemicals—including cyanide‑based insecticides—entering Kenya through loose border checks with Tanzania. Despite legislation prohibiting such chemicals, enforcement gaps allow smugglers to supply local farmers with potent toxins, raising alarm over potential spill‑over harm to wildlife.

The deaths are framed within a larger context of growing human‑wildlife conflict. Expansion of agriculture and lodges into the Amboseli ecosystem has encroached on the resources elephants need to move and feed, intensifying clashes. As farmland encroaches on river corridors and fertile plains, the risk of unintended exposure to hazardous chemicals escalates.

Until a thorough, independent forensic investigation confirms the cause of death, speculation remains. The incident underscores an urgent need for more robust monitoring of pesticide use near wildlife habitats and stronger cross‑border regulation of toxic agrochemicals. Continued vigilance may help prevent future tragedies and preserve the ecological balance in Kenya’s iconic ecosystems.
