An Italian sniffer dog, known as Bruno, was tragically killed after consuming sausages embedded with nails that were maliciously thrown into his kennel, according to his trainer. Bruno, a dedicated seven-year-old bloodhound, gained recognition for successfully locating nine missing persons throughout his illustrious career and had even been honored by Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
The Prime Minister condemned the act as "vile, cowardly, unacceptable," expressing gratitude towards Bruno for his contributions. His trainer, Arcangelo Caressa, revealed that he had a clear idea of who was behind the brutal killing, expressing his intention to ensure that justice is served. Authorities suspect the killing was motivated by revenge for Bruno's efforts in dismantling dog fighting operations.
In an emotional Facebook post, Caressa mourned the loss of Bruno, stating, "Today I died with you," and reflecting on the bond they shared, describing Bruno as a "brother." Discovering Bruno lifeless in his kennel at the Endas search and rescue training center in Taranto, Puglia, filled him with sorrow, leading him to assert that the true desolation came from a human's betrayal.
The police and prosecutor’s office of Italy have launched a collaborative investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Caressa conveyed that he had received death threats prior to the incident, suggesting that it was a targeted act rather than a random one. He asserted his resolve to remain steadfast in his mission, denouncing the act as one rooted in greed and vengeance.
Italian MP and animal welfare advocate, Michela Vittoria Brambilla, urged for prompt legal action against those responsible, positing that Bruno's fame made him a target for criminal factions. In light of a recently enacted law designed to impose severe penalties for animal torture, she called for its enforcement in Bruno's case, emphasizing the need to acknowledge the suffering he endured. "We owe it to this noble animal," she stated, underscoring the societal responsibility to honor animal lives and their sacrifices.
