In brief

Last week, the author joined a group in Brooklyn to learn Hong Kong-style mahjong, a game that piqued her curiosity but also prompted feelings of doubt and frustration. Yet, despite these challenges, the invitation to embrace a new hobby with others offers a promising glimpse of future camaraderie.

In a bid to explore new experiences, I attended a lesson on Hong Kong-style mahjong in Brooklyn, guided by a friend eager to expand our recreational activities. The vibrant colors and satisfying sounds of the game intrigued me, reminiscent of my mother's regular mahjong games. However, my enthusiasm met with initial intimidation as I navigated the complexity of its rules and gameplay alongside a group of fellow novices. The lesson began with a demonstration of setting up the game, illustrated by our patient instructor who took the time to repeat the instructions. This was my first encounter with the game's mechanics, which started to feel overwhelming—confusing terms like 'pung' and 'flower tiles' derailed my understanding. Questions began filling my mind: Was this exploration truly worthwhile? Shouldn't I stick to familiar comforts rather than venture into uncharted territory full of potential embarrassment? In retrospect, learning something new after years of comfort does not come easily. This realization made me question my choices—was I suited for challenges that came with discomfort, especially when my time and mental space seemed so limited?Days later, to my surprise, my friend informed me she had purchased a mahjong set for us. Out of the blue, an opportunity arose to create shared moments, to endure the awkwardness together as we navigated the lessons of this new game. In that moment, the potential for forming a community and forging deeper bonds transformed the repetitive trials of learning into something enriching and fulfilling.Being inexperienced isn't always pleasant, yet, often, it paves the way to new rituals and camaraderie that are ultimately rewarding. Perhaps, it's in accepting the fluctuating balance of discomfort and connection that valuable experiences are born, ultimately echoing the call to keep learning and embracing new ventures together.
