In brief

A significant archaeological find at Abydos, Egypt, reveals a tomb estimated to be 3,600 years old, belonging to an unknown ancient king. This remarkable discovery provides new opportunities for research into a lost dynasty and presents an expansive burial chamber that dwarfs previous findings.

A groundbreaking discovery at the Abydos necropolis in Egypt has unveiled a massive tomb believed to belong to an unknown pharaoh, marking a significant advancement in the understanding of a historical dynasty once considered lost. The team, comprising both Egyptian archaeologists and researchers from the Penn Museum in the United States, announced this find on Thursday, labeling it the second royal tomb uncovered this year. The tomb is estimated to be around 3,600 years old, residing nearly 23 feet below the surface in one of Egypt's oldest cities, which served as a key burial site for early pharaohs and a renowned pilgrimage destination. Abydos, located approximately 300 miles south of Cairo, is notable for its extensive necropolis, particularly around Anubis Mountain, where archaeologists are actively excavating. While excavating the tomb at the mountain's base, the researchers encountered challenging conditions created by strong winds that have caused significant sand accumulation, burying ancient structures deeply. The newly discovered burial chamber showcases an ornately decorated entrance and contains several spacious rooms that feature towering vaults made from mud bricks. The scale of this tomb surpasses findings from over a decade ago, which led to the recognition of a previously lost dynasty from that era.Josef W. Wegner, a curator at the Penn Museum who leads the American contingent of the excavation team, expressed excitement about the discovery, noting its potential to open new avenues of research into this enigmatic period of Egyptian history. He remarked, "It’s a new chapter in investigating this dynasty," indicating that the uncovering of this tomb may significantly enhance understanding of the rulers who once governed ancient Egypt.
