Donald Trump is the only world leader capable of stopping Vladimir Putin from threatening Europe, according to Poland's President Karol Nawrocki.

In an interview with Radio 4's Today programme, he said the Russian leader was not to be trusted, but that Europe needed to support President Trump in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

President Nawrocki, known as a firm supporter of Trump even before arriving in Britain for meetings with PM Sir Keir Starmer and others, asserted that with Putin's Russia posing a direct threat to Poland and Central-Eastern Europe, Trump was the only person who could solve this problem and bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

He referred to last September’s mass incursion by Russian drones into Polish airspace as an extraordinary situation, noting that it was the first time a NATO member state encountered such a large-scale drone attack. He expressed concern that Russia was testing Poland's defenses and NATO's unity.

The Polish president expressed gratitude for Britain's assistance in sending RAF Typhoon jets to bolster Poland's defense. He remarked that Poland had been engaged in a hybrid war with Russia since 2021, contending with drone attacks and disinformation campaigns.

In light of Trump's recent controversial remarks, including threats regarding Greenland, President Nawrocki insisted that the U.S. remains the primary guarantor of security in Europe, despite conflicting statements from U.S. officials. He argued that European leaders need to prioritize security over ideological issues like climate policy and migration, advocating instead for increased defense spending, with Poland currently allocating close to 5% of its GDP toward defense.

Nawrocki also emphasized the importance of the Polish-U.K. relationship, highlighting the significant Polish community in the United Kingdom and the role of British soldiers in defending NATO's eastern flank. He hopes that Poland will be included in discussions for the upcoming G20 summit hosted by Britain.
