Russian Drone Strikes Ukrainian SBU HQ in Kyiv, President Claims Targeted Attack
A Russian unmanned aerial vehicle struck the building that houses the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the heart of Kyiv on Friday afternoon, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced. The drone apparently targeted the office of SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad, though it was unclear if he was inside at the time.
In a statement on Telegram, Zelensky said he had spoken with Poklad and ordered a “appropriate, tangible response” – a signal that Ukraine is prepared to retaliate. He added that the drone was aimed directly at the head of the SBU’s office and noted that Russian new drones are becoming more accurate, hinting that Moscow could increase strikes as one‑off surreptitious campaigns or ahead of US‑mediated talks this weekend.
Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha described the attack as a “major escalation that demands resolute responses” and highlighted that Russia’s strike occurred during a “renewed push for peace”, saying it revealed the Kremlin’s rejection of diplomacy. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that five people had been injured by the blast, though they were not necessarily inside the premises. A nearby café suffered damage, and a customer was taken to hospital.
The Russian defence ministry also reported a strike on a cargo vessel in Chornomorsk and a tanker near Odesa on the same day, underscoring the broadening of daytime drone operations. Analysts note that while Ukrainian government buildings have generally remained unscathed, this incident is a clear proof that Moscow’s advanced drones can reach critical domestic targets.
The strike comes just as US mediators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are slated to visit Russia and Ukraine in order to try to broker a ceasefire. Their meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and President Zelensky in Kyiv is intended to explore a settlement, but to date no breakthrough has emerged. The SBU’s role in coordinating covert strikes against Russian infrastructure makes it a high‑value target, and the recent incident may be a warning for Moscow’s next moves.
Images of the office filled with black smoke pouring from dual windows were widely circulated online. Firefighters are presently working to extinguish the fire and contain the damage. The SBU continues to coordinate with Ukrainian forces to respond to the attack and plan defensive measures against further drone incursions.
