Tanzania Mourns the Death of First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan

The husband of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar. Vice‑President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the loss, attributing it to a heart condition and announcing that funeral arrangements will be held in the village of Kizimkazi on the island’s southern coast.

Ameir, who married President Samia in 1978 before she entered politics, was an agricultural academic and had largely kept a low profile. He became the first First Gentleman of Tanzania when President Samia took office in 2021. The couple had four children together, and their daughter Wanu Hafidh Ameir serves in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.

The Vice President led tributes to Ameir and conveyed condolences to President Samia and the Hassan family. Regional leaders joined in mourning: Kenya’s President William Ruto expressed “deep sorrow” on social media, noting the loss of “a lifelong companion” to the Tanzanian president and a “distinguished son” of the country.

While Ameir’s public presence was limited, his career in agricultural science contributed quietly to national development. His passing highlights the intertwining of personal and public spheres for leaders in East Africa, where families often play key roles in governance and community life.
