Eighteen people are missing after a blast at a military explosives manufacturing facility in Tennessee on Friday.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis stated that one individual initially thought to be at the site has been located at home. A few casualties were reported, with four or five individuals transported to a nearby hospital following the enormous explosion that obliterated the factory.

There's nothing to describe, it's gone, Sheriff Davis remarked about the facility.

The plant, situated in Bucksnort, Tennessee, approximately 56 miles southwest of Nashville, specializes in developing, manufacturing, handling, and storing explosives. The cause of the blast is still under investigation.

Aerial images captured the devastation: charred debris, smoldering vehicles, and minimal structures remaining of the facility, which is operated by Accurate Energetic Systems.

During a press briefing, an emotional Sheriff Davis refrained from detailing the number of fatalities but indicated that the factory was operational when the explosion occurred, resulting in secondary blasts that necessitated a distance from first responders.

Workers who had just started their day now may be missing or deceased, Davis stated, emphasizing the human toll of the disaster.

Initially confirming that 19 individuals were unaccounted for, Davis reiterated the scale of the explosion, which scattered debris across half a square mile, and noted that the shock was felt in Waverly, a nearby town.

Tennessee's Governor Bill Lee reacted through social media, designating the event as a 'tragic incident' while local and state authorities collaborated with federal agencies in the response to this catastrophic explosion.

As the investigation unfolds, including a thorough examination by the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, authorities aim to understand if the explosion was accidental or deliberate. Sheriff Davis cautioned that they must explore the worst-case scenarios to uncover the truth.

On a local level, hospitals reported treating patients for minor injuries resulting from the blast, confirming some individuals were still receiving care from injuries linked to the incident.

Accuracy Energetic Systems has temporarily ceased its operations as the incident shakes the small community. Investigators remain on scene, promising a detailed examination over the coming days.

The explosion follows a risky history with explosives manufacturing, recalling another incident in 2014 at the same location resulting in one casualty.

Former explosives industry experts emphasize the importance of rigorous safety measures and adequate training for personnel working in such hazardous environments, noting that while explosions do occur globally, regulatory measures in the U.S. have shaped a more stable operational landscape.
