Two Teenagers Seriously Injured by Sword Attack at Swedish School

Brinell School in Fagersta was the scene of an alarming incident on Friday afternoon when a weapon— a sword—was brandished against students. Police were dispatched shortly after 14:00 local time, arresting a suspect who was later shot in the leg and taken into custody.

The attack left two teenagers with serious injuries and a third person wounded, though the extent of the third victim’s injuries has yet to be confirmed. Authorities confirmed that the incident posed no immediate danger to the public and that police were actively controlling the situation.

In the aftermath, eight nearby schools were placed under lockdown measures. Although these lockdowns have since been lifted, a state of high alert was declared across the Vastmanland region. The Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, described the incident as a “serious event,” while noting that investigators were working “very intensively” to uncover the motives behind the violence.

The timing of the attack is particularly striking, occurring as students were returning to classes after a summer break and before the new academic term commenced. Brinell School hosts just under 500 pupils, according to the public broadcaster SVT, and is situated roughly 170 kilometres northwest of the capital, Stockholm.

Sweden has seen a disturbing series of attacks on educational facilities in recent years. In 2025, a mass shooting at an adult education centre in Orebro resulted in eleven deaths, prompting a tightening of gun laws. In 2018, a violent assault at a secondary school in Malmö claimed two teachers’ lives, after which a student was found responsible. Earlier, in 2015, a teacher and a student were killed in a sword attack at a school in Trollhattan.

Given the use of a sword—a weapon not regulated by ordinary gun laws—security analysts suggest re‑examining protocols not only for firearms but also for other potentially lethal weapons on school premises. School officials, parents, and students have voiced concerns that existing measures may not be sufficient to prevent such incidents.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are investigating how the attacker acquired the sword, the motive behind the attack, and whether there are broader networks fostering youth violence. Meanwhile, schools across Sweden are reviewing their security settings, and lawmakers are discussing possible reforms to prevent future school violence.
