Vincent Pastore, Iconic “The Sopranos” Actor, Dies at 80
A veteran of stage and screen, Vincent Pastore (1946 – 2026) was best known for his portrayal of Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero in the critically acclaimed HBO drama The Sopranos. His character’s arc—friend to Tony Soprano and later FBI informant—became a fan favorite despite the character’s early death in the series.
Pastore’s acting career began after a stint in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He first appeared in films such as Goodfellas (1990) and Carlito’s Way (1993) before stepping into television roles on Law & Order, General Hospital and Hawaii Five‑O.
“To the world he will always be remembered as “Big Pussy,” but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more,” said his manager, Robert Attermann.
“He was passionate about his craft, generous to young actors and a loyal, humorous friend.”
In 2000 his fellow Sopranos cast members received the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, underscoring his contribution to one of television’s most celebrated ensembles.
Pastore’s death was reported by several U.S. outlets, with CBS News noting he was found at home in the Bronx, without signs of foul play. He leaves behind a legacy rooted in a community‑based ethos and a commitment to storytelling that continues to inspire aspiring performers across the industry.
