In brief
In Burkina Faso, scientists involved in anti-malaria projects face baseless accusations from pro-Russian activists, alleging Western intentions to harm Africans. These campaigns aim to erode trust in Western healthcare initiatives and strengthen Russian influence in Africa, concerning U.S. and European officials.
In Burkina Faso, scientists are diligently working to combat malaria, a major health threat on the continent, through the use of genetically modified mosquito larvae. However, these efforts have become the target of an online disinformation campaign led by pro-Russian activists. The narrative being propagated falsely suggests that the scientists, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, are spreading diseases instead of preventing them. A notable figure in this campaign is Egountchi Behanzin, a French-Togolese activist, who spreads anti-Western messages and praises Russia, despite lacking scientific evidence for his claims. His social media influence extends to over 600,000 followers, contributing to a broader effort to discredit U.S.-funded health initiatives in Africa. This disinformation activity is seen as a tactic to weaken Western influence in Africa and promote Russian interests, drawing concern from U.S. and European officials working on improving the continent's healthcare infrastructure amidst ongoing epidemics.
