Gérard Depardieu's Sexual Assault Trial Delayed Until March Due to Health Issues
The French actor’s trial has been postponed after he failed to appear in court, citing medical complications.
Gérard Depardieu, a prominent figure in the French cinematic landscape, is embroiled in allegations that threaten to cloud his legacy. Scheduled for a court appearance to respond to sexual assault charges on October 28, the actor was absent, prompting the judge to postpone the trial until March 24 and 25, 2025. His lawyer attributed this absence to health issues, supported by medical certificates indicating Depardieu's longstanding struggles with diabetes and heart ailments, including recent exacerbations due to anxiety related to the legal proceedings.
The current case against Depardieu stems from accusations made by two women, both of whom were working on the set of the film "Les Volets Verts" (“The Green Shutters”), released in 2022. In one instance, the actor is alleged to have forcibly held a set decorator and inappropriately groped her while making lewd comments. The second accusation involves a similar physical assault against an assistant director, where it is claimed he twice grabbed her buttocks and once touched her breasts without consent.
As the entertainment community and the public await further developments, the postponement raises questions surrounding the accountability of actors in the face of such allegations, as well as the impact on survivors who come forward with their experiences. The court has mandated that a medical examination be conducted, with findings to be reported by March 4, potentially clearing the way for the trial to finally commence.
