Gisèle Pelicot Reflects on Landmark Rape Trial After Ex-Husband's Conviction
Gisèle Pelicot speaks out after her ex-husband Dominique Pelicot and 50 other men were convicted in a historic rape trial in France.
Gisèle Pelicot addressed the media outside a courtroom in Avignon, France, on Thursday, after her ex-husband Dominique Pelicot, together with 50 other men, was convicted in a significant rape trial. The verdict delivered a 20-year sentence for Mr. Pelicot, who admitted to drugging and assaulting Ms. Pelicot over nearly a decade and facilitating other men to join in the abuse.
In her remarks, Ms. Pelicot articulated her thoughts, saying, “I first think of my three children: David, Caroline, and Florian. My grandchildren are also in my heart because they represent the future, and it is for them that I fought this battle — as well as for my daughters-in-law.” She poignantly reflected on the broader impact of such tragedies, adding, “I also think of all the other families affected by this tragedy.”
Ms. Pelicot continued to voice her solidarity with other victims, stating, “I want the unrecognized victims, whose stories often remain hidden, to know that we share the same struggle.” Expressing gratitude to her supporters throughout the trial, she said their testimonies inspired her to persevere through the lengthy legal process.
Reflecting on the decision to make the trial public starting September 2, she explained, “By doing this, I aimed for society to engage in the relevant discussions that arose from it. I have never regretted that choice.” Ms. Pelicot concluded with a hopeful outlook for future harmony and mutual respect between genders, affirming her belief in a collective commitment towards a better tomorrow.
