Romania has announced that a Russian drone breached its airspace, making it the second NATO country to report such an incident recently. According to the Romanian Defense Ministry, two F-16 fighter jets were conducting monitoring operations near the Ukrainian border when the drone was detected.
This latest event has stirred concerns within NATO and the wider European Union regarding enhanced Russian military activities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the incident, asserting that such incursions are indicative of Russia's expanding military aggression. He stated, 'This cannot be a mistake; it's an obvious expansion of the war by Russia.'
The incident is reminiscent of a recent occurrence in Poland, where authorities reported shooting down at least three Russian drones entering their airspace. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk indicated that preventive operations are underway to address any further aerial threats.
Romania's Defense Ministry also highlighted that the drone was detected roughly 20 km southwest of Chilia Veche and stated that it posed no immediate danger as it did not traverse populated areas or military facilities.
The recognition of these incursions has led the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, to label them as 'unacceptable breaches' of member states' sovereignty. The coordination between Poland and Romania in response to aerial threats marks a critical moment for NATO unity amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The rising tensions are expected to incite further military preparedness among Eastern European nations, with the Czech Republic sending additional support units to Poland in light of these developments.
