Ukraine Faces Record Drone Assault From Russia Amidst Fragile Diplomacy
Ukraine reports its largest drone attack since the start of the Russian invasion, with significant implications for ongoing diplomatic efforts and international relations.
Ukraine has announced it experienced the largest drone assault since the full-scale invasion by Russia commenced, affecting multiple areas including Kyiv where a civilian fatality was reported. According to the Ukrainian air force, 273 drones were deployed by Russia by 08:00 on Sunday (05:00 GMT), targeting regions such as central Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk in the east. This surge in drone strikes occurred just one day before a planned dialogue between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been advocating for a ceasefire.
The meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials, which took place for the first time in over three years on Friday in Turkey, resulted mainly in an agreement for a new prisoner swap, leaving broader issues unresolved. In the wake of the latest assaults, Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he, along with leaders from Britain, France, and Poland, would hold a virtual meeting with Trump prior to his conversation with Putin on Monday morning.
Ukraine's air force revealed that among the drones launched, 88 were intercepted while another 128 malfunctioned "without negative consequences." Nevertheless, the drone strikes resulted in one confirmed death and injuries to at least three others in the suburbs of Kyiv. This latest attack surpasses the previous record for drone strikes set on February 23, coinciding with the third anniversary of the invasion, when 267 drones were launched.
Ukrainian officials interpreted the drone barrage as a sign that Russia remains steadfast in its commitment to warfare despite mounting international pressures for peace. Andriy Yermak, a senior aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasized that the talks in Istanbul appeared to be mere facades for continual aggression from Putin.
As part of his diplomatic efforts, President Zelensky was engaged in meetings in Rome, including an audience with Pope Leo following the inauguration ceremony, as the international community anxiously watches the developments in the ongoing conflict.
