GRAND BLANC, Mich. (AP) — Authorities report that one person has died and nine others have been injured in a shooting incident that took place at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan. The tragedy unfolded on Sunday morning, with the Grand Blanc Township Police confirming that the suspect is also deceased.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located approximately 50 miles north of Detroit, was reported to have been set on fire amidst the chaos. Police Chief William Renye stated that there is currently no ongoing threat to the community, although they have yet to disclose the conditions of the surviving victims.

Situated near residential areas and a Jehovah’s Witness congregation, the church serves a community of about 8,000 residents. Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow, stating, 'Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.'

The shooting occurred just a day after the death of church president Russell M. Nelson, who was 101 years old, marking a significant moment for the community. Following church tradition, the next president is expected to be Dallin H. Oaks.
