**First British Tourists Allowed Back into North Korea Share Insights on Their Unique Experience**

As some of the first British tourists to travel to North Korea following a five-year hiatus, they share their experiences of a tightly controlled visit amid ongoing international tensions.

Tourists recently allowed back into North Korea have expressed mixed feelings about their experience, underscoring the complexity of tourism in one of the world's most isolated regimes.

The trip was organized by Young Pioneer Tours and Koryo Tours, two travel agencies that resumed operations after the country closed its borders at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The tourists, hailing from the UK, France, Germany, and Australia, crossed into the remote area of Rason for a tightly regulated four-night tour.

Guides in North Korea read strict instructions to visitors, emphasizing not to insult the leaders and to avoid judging their way of life. There is little room for spontaneous exploration; tourists are chaperoned at all times, reflecting a high level of control over the experience. One visitor, British YouTuber Mike O'Kennedy, likened the experience to being on a school trip, recounting how guides even monitored bathroom breaks.

Amid this control, some tourists noted a unique glimpse into daily life, observing workers in the streets. However, the environment felt bleak to many, with visible signs of struggle. On one of the tours, children sang and danced to animations of missile attacks, a stark representation of North Korea's military ideology mixed with the day-to-day education of its youth.

The current itinerary for tourists avoids the capital, Pyongyang, concentrating on Rason, a relatively small economic zone. This area has been described as a mini capitalist enclave within an otherwise socialist state, with Chinese businesses operating partnerships with North Koreans. However, even here, infrastructure appears neglected, with tourists pointing out disrepair and poverty reflected in their surroundings.

Despite the government's tight grip on information, the guides surprisingly displayed a level of awareness about global politics, discussing events like the war in Ukraine and economic policies. At the same time, any conversation about the local state of affairs or criticism is significantly discouraged due to the regime's strict laws around free speech.

Critics argue that reviving tourism in North Korea primarily benefits the state rather than the local population. Joanna Hosaniak from the Citizens Alliance for North Korean Human Rights highlights that local communities see little benefit as tourism revenue funds the regime and its military endeavors, leaving much of the population in poverty.

As the brief interaction between a tourist and a local girl at a school reveals, the disconnect between the desires of North Koreans for engagement with the outside world and the reality of their confined existence remains pronounced.

While the resumption of tourism offers Westerners a rare insight into North Korea, it also raises ethical concerns reshaping the narrative of travel in one of the world's most secretive nations.
