**Harvey Weinstein's Retrial Commences Amid New Allegations**

Prosecutors and defense attorneys presented their opening arguments on Wednesday in the retrial of Harvey Weinstein, the former film producer whose previous conviction was overturned. "The defendant wanted their bodies, and the more they resisted, the more forceful he got," claimed Assistant District Attorney Shannon Lucey, addressing the jury.

This third trial in five years sees Weinstein confronting accusations from a former television production assistant, an aspiring actress, and a model. He has maintained a plea of not guilty while his legal team aims to undermine the women's reliability. Attorney Arthur Aidala argued that the prosecution's arguments lack substantiation. "The prosecution's case will fall flat on its face once they hear all the evidence," he told jurors.

The retrial follows a ruling last April by a court of appeals that voided Weinstein's earlier conviction, deeming that he did not receive a fair trial due to prejudicial testimony about uncharged allegations. Previously, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York after a 2020 sex crime conviction, and he is currently also serving a 16-year sentence for a separate rape conviction in California.

The initial week of proceedings has seen a jury selected, comprising seven women and five men, who will evaluate the evidence presented throughout the trial. Previous testimonies from actress Jessica Mann and the former production assistant, Miriam Haley, will likely be revisited, alongside new claims from another unnamed woman alleging oral sexual assault by Weinstein in a Manhattan hotel back in 2006.

Due to ongoing medical issues, including diabetes and cancer, Weinstein has been transferred to a secure hospital unit. Following a recent heart surgery, his attorneys secured permission for him to remain at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan while not in court. They contended that he was experiencing inadequate medical care in the unsanitary conditions of Rikers Island, a prison slated for closure. Weinstein has faced allegations of sexual misconduct from over 100 women and is anticipated to spend the remainder of his life in prison.

The allegations against Weinstein and his subsequent convictions have significantly impacted the #MeToo movement, which addresses sexual abuse by influential figures. Before the scandal, Weinstein and his brother Bob were amongst the most powerful names in Hollywood, co-founding Miramax, the studio behind Oscar-winning films such as "Shakespeare in Love" and "Pulp Fiction."
