South Korea Suspends Jeju Air Crash Report Amid Family Backlash

The release of a preliminary investigation report on the Jeju Air crash was halted after victims' families expressed strong objections to its content.

Following a chaotic news conference, South Korean authorities retracted a preliminary report on the Jeju Air disaster, as victim families accused officials of prematurely blaming the pilots and inadequate explanations regarding the crash's cause.

South Korean authorities abruptly canceled the anticipated release of an interim report concerning the tragic crash of a Jeju Air passenger jet, in the wake of intense objections from the victims' families. The incident took place on December 29, resulting in the deaths of 179 out of 181 people on board. The decision to withhold the report came following a news conference where grieving families expressed their dissatisfaction, claiming that the findings unfairly laid blame on the pilots without thorough justification.

During a private briefing prior to the public announcement, investigators shared their analysis of the Boeing 737-800's engines, suggesting that bird strikes, occurring moments before an emergency landing, contributed significantly to the incident. However, relatives' lawyer, Pillkyu Hwang, asserted that the report's tone seemed to absolve the engines of fault while casting blame on the birds and the pilots. Families were disturbed by what they perceived as a premature conclusion in ongoing investigations.

Hwang emphasized the need for rigorous and cautious language in discussing the findings, stating, "It kind of puts all the blame on the dead birds and the dead pilots." Family representatives expressed concern that the framing of the report may mislead the public and media, creating an impression that concrete conclusions had already been reached when the investigation was still ongoing. The overall sentiment among the relatives was one of anger and disappointment, as they sought a more transparent and accountable investigation process.
