A British man is accused of attempting to drown his daughter-in-law during a family dispute while on vacation in Florida.
In a troubling incident at a Florida resort, 62-year-old British resident Mark Gibbon has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly attempting to drown his daughter-in-law in a swimming pool. The confrontation reportedly ignited following disagreements over childcare responsibilities concerning Gibbon's grandchildren during a family vacation at the Solterra Resort, located in Davenport, close to the famed Walt Disney World.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Gibbon, originally from Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, engaged in a heated argument that escalated dangerously. Authorities state that Gibbon allegedly pushed his 33-year-old daughter-in-law underwater multiple times while preventing her from breathing. The situation prompted a young girl, described as a relative, to jump into the pool in a desperate attempt to save her mother, a heroic act that ultimately led to Gibbon ceasing his actions.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd emphasized the importance of visitor behavior, remarking, "It's great that Polk County draws visitors from all across the world, but we expect vacationers to behave while they visit with us, just as we expect our lifelong residents to do the same." He added, "Because Mr. Gibbon couldn't control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated."
Following the incident, Gibbon was apprehended and is now facing serious charges, including two counts of battery along with the attempted murder charge, as the case reflects underlying tensions that can flare during familial interactions while on holiday.
