American Airlines to Introduce Free Wi-Fi on Most Flights by 2026
American Airlines announces partnership with AT&T to provide complimentary Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members, enhancing in-flight connectivity.
American Airlines has revealed plans to provide complimentary Wi-Fi to members of its AAdvantage loyalty program on most flights starting January 2026. The airline's initiative comes as part of a partnership with AT&T and is set to equip about 90% of its fleet with the internet service, positioning it amongst the last major domestic airlines to embrace free connectivity.
Heather Garboden, chief customer officer at American Airlines, noted that the move responds to customer demand for in-flight connectivity for various activities, including work, social media, and entertainment streaming. The service will leverage satellite internet capabilities through providers Viasat and Intelsat.
Currently, the cost for Wi-Fi on American Airlines flights starts at $9, and over 500 regional aircraft are expected to be equipped with high-speed wireless by the end of 2025. The introduction of complimentary Wi-Fi aligns American Airlines with trends set by other major carriers, including Delta Air Lines, which added free Wi-Fi in 2023, and United Airlines, leveraging SpaceX's Starlink system for its inflight connectivity.
JetBlue has been offering free Wi-Fi—branded as Fly-Fi—since 2013, showcasing a longer commitment to customer connectivity. The evolution of in-flight internet began as early as 2003 with Lufthansa and Boeing's short-lived Wi-Fi service, indicating a long-standing interest in enhancing passenger experience through connectivity.
Amidst rising consumer expectations for in-flight service, American Airlines' move could significantly influence competition, reshaping in-flight experience standards in the airline industry.
