OREM, Utah (AP) — Authorities are on the hunt for the assassin of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while addressing a crowd at Utah Valley University. The assailant, identified only through video and photographic evidence, managed to flee the scene after the incident, prompting a massive investigation.

On Thursday, federal investigators shared details including a palm print and a shoe impression linked to the suspect, while also revealing a Mauser .30-caliber rifle discovered in nearby woods. As of Friday, over 7,000 leads had been submitted by the public, with law enforcement struggling to pinpoint a suspect or establish a clear motive.

“We cannot do our job without the public’s help,” said Utah Governor Spencer Cox, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in solving this case. In light of the violence that ensued at the university campus, which drew attention from both sides of the political spectrum, the state is now offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

The shocking assault occurred in broad daylight, with videos circulating online showing Kirk being shot while discussing social issues with attendees. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene where attendees rushed to find safety, barricading themselves in classrooms.

Federal officials are treating this incident as a targeted act, which intertwines with a larger dialogue about rising political violence across the nation. Kirk’s political contributions, particularly among young Republicans through his organization, Turning Point USA, have made him a polarized public figure. His recent events, including the one prior to his assassination, faced significant backlash, with protests organized against his messages.

In a remarkable yet grim twist, Kirk made headlines for his previous social media posts concerning controversial debates, particularly those about gun violence, correlating with the circumstances of his death. Notably, Trump's reaction included plans to award Kirk posthumously with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

As the investigation develops and the public reacts to this alarming act of violence, many are left pondering the implications for freedom of speech, public safety, and the volatile state of political discourse in America.
