Migrants Rescued from Stranded Oil Platform in Mediterranean
32 individuals trapped for days on an oil platform have been rescued; conditions worsened by lack of food and water.
Thirty-two migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean were rescued by the NGO ship Aurora after being stranded on a British Gas-managed oil platform for several days. The organization Mediterranea reported that the group, which included "women, men, and children," had been without food or water, contributing to dire conditions. One individual had died during their time on the platform.
NGO Sea Watch confirmed that the rescue took place on Tuesday afternoon, but the ship's final destination remains uncertain as no country has designated a port of safety nearby. Despite the ongoing emergency and the situation's critical nature, no European nation intervened, leaving the stranded migrants in an ambiguous legal limbo in international waters, positioned between the Tunisian and Maltese search and rescue zones.
The situation came to light when the migrants contacted Alarm Phone, an emergency hotline for those in distress at sea, reporting severe hunger and the health crisis among them. As part of their distress call, they mentioned that one individual had already perished. A video shared by NGOs on social media featured a young man expressing their plight; he recounted their departure from Libya five days prior before their dinghy capsized, stating, "Those who made it here and didn't die at sea are dying of hunger and exhaustion."
The ongoing migration crisis continues to be a pressing issue, with over 210,000 individuals undertaking the treacherous journey across the Central Mediterranean in 2023 alone, according to UN data. Alarmingly, more than 60,000 were intercepted and returned to Africa, with nearly 2,000 lives lost at sea. The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive policies and effective intervention that address the humanitarian challenges faced by migrants navigating this perilous route.
