Teenage Pilot's Antarctic Adventure Faces Legal Hurdles
Ethan Guo, a 19-year-old aspiring aviator, lands in legal trouble after unapproved landing in Antarctica.
19-year-old American pilot and content creator, Ethan Guo, has found himself at the center of a legal dilemma following his unauthorized landing on an island off the Antarctic coast. Guo, who was attempting to reach all seven continents in a solo flight, was detained by Chilean authorities. However, as of Thursday, he has been released and is currently staying at a Chilean facility on King George Island, approximately 75 miles from Antarctica, while the legal proceedings unfold.
Chilean officials reported that although Guo was initially held in custody, he is now free to leave the island but must remain in Chile until his case is resolved. Guo has been active on social media platforms like TikTok, where he boasts over 329,000 followers, and Instagram, with a following of around 1.3 million, sharing his adventurous journey in real time.
The young aviator acquired his pilot's license at the age of 17, aspiring to be the first person to fly solo to all seven continents. His goal also included raising $1 million for cancer research. Notably, Antarctica was the last continent he needed to visit, having taken off from Punta Arenas—a city near the southern extremity of Chile—on Saturday morning. Prosecutors stated that his flight plan indicated he intended to return to Punta Arenas but ended with an unplanned landing in Antarctica.
