Authorities are still working to uncover the motivations behind the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at a college in Utah. The conservative activist's family has organized a memorial next week to honor his life and legacy.

Tyler James Robinson, 22, from Washington, Utah, has been arrested under suspicion of aggravated murder and other felonies. Formal charges are expected to be filed by early next week, coinciding with his first court appearance.

Search warrants executed at Robinson’s family home, located approximately 240 miles southwest of Utah Valley University—where the shooting occurred—have yielded further insights as authorities interview relatives.

What do we know about the motive?

Details surrounding the motive of the attack remain sparse. Utah Governor Spencer Cox noted that family members indicated Robinson had become more politically active in the past few years. They recalled a dinner discussion where Robinson mentioned Kirk’s scheduled appearance at the university, questioning whether Kirk was a proponent of hate.

While state records indicate Robinson is registered to vote, he is not affiliated with a political party and is marked as inactive, suggesting he did not participate in the last two general elections. Interestingly, his parents identify as Republicans.

A critical development involves the ammunition retrieved from the crime scene, which bore engravings with taunting anti-fascist sentiments, including one bullet casing inscribed with the phrase, Hey, fascist! Catch! Governor Cox noted this particular detail.

What do we know about Robinson?

Born and raised near St. George, Utah, Robinson has a background connecting him with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from a young age, according to church representatives. His family appears to be closely-knit, with active participation in family outings and outdoor activities.

Despite being a high-achieving student and recipient of a prestigious academic scholarship to Utah State University in 2021, Robinson attended for only a brief time. Currently, he is enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College.

What has been the fallout from the assassination?

The event has sparked renewed discussions on the need for civility in political dialogue, particularly on social media platforms. Several individuals have faced repercussions for comments made regarding Kirk and the shooting incident, including firings and suspensions.

For instance, MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd lost his position after making remarks about Kirk, and a Michigan Office Depot employee was dismissed for refusing to print flyers for a vigil, labeling them as propaganda.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' education commissioner cautioned that making egregious remarks about Kirk’s shooting could have serious consequences for educators, including possible suspension of their teaching licenses.

In light of these events, security has been heightened for public figures, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, amid explicit calls to “take action” against him.

Memorial to be held in Arizona

A memorial for Kirk, organized by his conservative organization Turning Point USA, is set for September 21 at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, home to the Arizona Cardinals. His funeral arrangements included his casket's transport aboard Air Force Two with Vice President JD Vance.

His widow, Erika Kirk, pledged to continue his campus outreach initiatives and media presence, declaring in a livestreamed message, The movement my husband built will not die. I refuse to let that happen. Memorial tributes, including flowers and flags, have been left at a makeshift memorial at Utah Valley University’s entrance, with additional security measures planned for when classes resume on September 17.
