In the lead-up to Canada Day, a modest apartment building in Ottawa’s Little Italy has turned into a striking manifestation of national pride and resistance. The Sidney Towers Housing Co-operative, located above a Tesla dealership, has become the canvas for a flurry of Canadian flags, inspired by growing tensions between the U.S. and Canada spurred by President Trump’s tariff war and comments about annexation.

The display was initiated by Graziana Marcantomo, a local tailor who resides in the building, as a form of protest against what she perceives as an insult to Canadian sovereignty. “Trump, the tariff and the insults and the whatnot, I don’t think we deserve that,” expressed Marcantomo, who emigrated from Italy. Her decision to fill the balconies with flags not only serves as a tribute to Canada but also stands as a subtle, artistic rebuttal to the political climate surrounding the nearby Tesla outlet, which has been associated with Trump’s ally Elon Musk.
