"As a UN-backed report confirms famine in Gaza, residents recount the dire effects of hunger on their families and community, challenging assertions about the situation on the ground."
Residents of the Gaza Strip have recently shared their distressing experiences of extreme hunger, following a United Nations-backed report that has confirmed famine conditions in parts of the territory for the first time. Reem Tawfiq Khader, a 41-year-old mother of five in Gaza City, remarked, "The declaration of famine came too late, but it is still important." She expressed her despair over the lack of protein in their diet for the past five months, noting that her youngest child, who is just four years old, is oblivious to what fruit and vegetables even look like.
The UN has indicated that Israel has significantly restricted the flow of aid into Gaza, a claim that the Israeli government rejects. Israel counters that claims of starvation in the region are unfounded, directly opposing the assessments made by over 100 humanitarian groups and various UN agencies. In a recent statement, the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) pointed to an "entirely man-made" famine affecting Gaza City and its surrounding neighborhoods, revealing that more than half a million people are facing "catastrophic" living conditions marked by starvation and poverty.
Another resident, Rajaa Talbeh, 47, who fled her home in Gaza City's Zeitoun district, has lost 25 kg (55 lbs) since the onset of the conflict. Currently residing in a makeshift tent near the beach, she struggles to find gluten-free food due to her intolerance, explaining, "Since the war began, I can't find what I need in the market, and even when I do, I can't afford it."
Similarly, 29-year-old Rida Hijeh shared her anguish over her five-year-old daughter Lamia's drastic weight loss from 19 kg (42 lbs) to 10.5 kg (23 lbs), a situation she attributes directly to the famine. Rida reported that her daughter now suffers from malnutrition symptoms like swollen legs and thinning hair. "She cannot walk. I went to many clinics, but none of them provided any treatment or support," Rida lamented.
Mandy Blackman, a nurse from the UK working with UK-Med in Gaza, observed that around 70% of mothers attending their clinics for maternal health, prenatal and postnatal care are clinically malnourished. She notes that the consequences of malnutrition are dire, as babies are born smaller and more vulnerable.
The human toll of the ongoing military campaign in Gaza is staggering, as over 62,000 individuals have reportedly lost their lives since Israel's military actions began following a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 individuals. According to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, malnutrition and famine conditions have claimed at least 271 lives, including 112 children.
Another Gaza City resident, Aseel, detailed her personal struggle with hunger, having lost 10 kg (22 lbs) in recent months and having not consumed any fruits or meat during that time. Together with her sister-in-law, who is seeking affordable baby formula for her month-old baby, Aseel shared, "When we find baby formula, it costs 180 shekels (£39) per can. Like thousands of people, we live day by day."
