In an urgent call for peace, Syria's Interim President, Ahmed al-Shara, appealed for national unity this past Sunday amidst escalating violence that has reportedly claimed over 1,000 lives in recent clashes. Al-Shara, speaking from a mosque in Damascus, emphasized, "We must preserve national unity and civil peace," as various monitoring organizations documented significant civilian casualties in the conflicted coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus.

The turmoil reignited last week, primarily between forces loyal to the new government and those adhering to the regime of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad. With airstrikes, artillery, and drone assaults reported, the fighting has intensified amid fears of renewed sectarian conflict, particularly in regions heavily inhabited by the Alawite community, which historically held power under Assad’s rule.
