Global Perspectives on the "In the Air" Photography Theme

A stunning collection of photographs submitted by readers worldwide captures moments "in the air," showcasing diverse interpretations of the theme.

From Myanmar's fishing techniques to aerial acrobatics in nature, photographers immortalized the theme "in the air" through a global lens. The next theme for submissions is "road trip," with entries due by November 5, 2024.

In a vibrant showcase of creativity, we invited our readers to submit their best photographs based on the theme "in the air." The response was overwhelming, with a rich array of images from various corners of the globe, each offering a unique interpretation of what it means to exist or find beauty in the air.

Steve Demeranville captures the tranquility of dawn in Myanmar as local fishermen demonstrate their unique net casting techniques, presenting a moment where the net catches the first warm rays of sunlight. Meanwhile, Carlos Gomez Llata provides an enchanting glimpse of nature’s agility, featuring a delicate creature mid-flight as it seeks sustenance.

Other submissions included Jason Shrubb’s lively portrayal of the Arts by the Sea festival in Bournemouth, where bubbles filled the atmosphere with joy and excitement. Roland Trope’s photograph from the iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York features the beloved Paddington Bear balloon, a symbol of festive cheer floating through the city streets.

Further artistic expressions came from Peter Norris, who showcased the striking human towers of Castellera de Figueres in Catalonia, and David Hanson’s action shot from the Crankworks event in Whistler, Canada. Notably, Philip Marchington captured a playful moment with his son airborne on a broomstick, inspiring thoughts of childhood imagination.

Jasmine Swindail provided an artistic composition of a meerkat appearing as if it were suspended in air against the backdrop of a vast sky. Geoff Matthews commemorated the Red Arrows as they concluded their 60th Anniversary season during airshow festivities. Sean Knight presented an imaginative art installation by Lake Geneva, while Zayne Lockhart showcased the grace of a robin in flight.

John West’s narrative-driven photograph, inspired by storytelling for his grandchildren, depicts paperclip children in mock superhero escapades, a delightful representation of childhood wonder.

Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that the upcoming theme for submissions is "road trip," with submissions due by November 5, 2024. We invite readers to explore, capture, and share their interpretations, which will be featured later that week in the "In Pictures" section of the BBC News website. We remind photographers that all entries must adhere to our terms and conditions, and all photographs are subject to copyright.
