Over 200 Individuals Missing as Catastrophic Flooding Devastates Buner District in Pakistan

Monsoon floods and landslides in north-west Pakistan leave more than 200 missing, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.

As severe monsoon flooding continues in Pakistan, more than 200 individuals are reported missing in Buner district, following the loss of over 300 lives in recent days across the region. Rescue operations are hampered by damaged infrastructure, while experts warn that climate change intensifies such natural disasters.

In the wake of catastrophic flooding and landslides in north-west Pakistan, local authorities confirm that over 200 individuals are unaccounted for in the Buner district. This alarming update comes amidst a broader humanitarian crisis, as recent monsoon rains have led to the deaths of more than 300 people across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Jehangir Khan, a spokesman for the Buner deputy commissioner’s office, reported to the BBC that at least 209 individuals remain missing, and fears mount that this number may increase. In a heartbreaking development, rescue teams have found eight unidentified bodies, as families of the deceased have been unable to locate their loved ones due to severely damaged roads.

As officials assess the extent of the destruction, it becomes clear that "10 to 12 entire villages" in Buner have been partially buried under mud and debris. The provincial disaster management authority’s Asfandyar Khattak noted that multiple districts, including Shangla, are also grappling with numerous missing persons.

The seasonal monsoon period between June and September usually brings substantial rainfall to South Asia, contributing to flooding and landslides. However, scientists warn that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of these severe weather events. Recent torrential rainfall has also affected Indian-administered Kashmir, where flash floods earlier claimed the lives of at least 60 people. In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, an additional nine fatalities have been reported this week, alongside five in the Gilgit-Baltistan region.

As government forecasters predict heavy rains to continue until August 21 in the north-west, several areas have already been declared disaster zones. The current monsoon season has resulted in at least 650 fatalities in Pakistan this year alone. In July, the province of Punjab, hosting nearly half of the nation’s population, recorded a staggering 73% increase in rainfall compared to the previous year, with corresponding rises in casualties.

Northern Pakistan is noted for its significant glaciation, but scientists indicate that climate change is causing the glaciers to melt rapidly. This melting may contribute to landslides and flooding, as the stability of mountain structures is compromised. While researchers continue to study the causes of the recent catastrophes, ice melt is identified as a potential factor exacerbating the situation.

The intersection of natural disasters and climate change highlights the urgency for international support and effective disaster management in a region increasingly vulnerable to unpredictable weather patterns.
