UK Lawyers Urge Government to Sanction Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

In a letter signed by 828 legal experts, former justices, and law professionals, the UK government is called upon to impose sanctions on Israel due to its military offensive in Gaza, which is perceived as potentially genocidal and violating international law. Hundreds of legal professionals in the UK, numbering 828, have issued an open letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, demanding the government take a more assertive stance in addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. They call for the use of "all available means," including sanctions and a review of trade relations with Israel, to halt the violence.

This letter comes in light of the drastic escalation of military actions in Gaza, where recent reports indicate significant loss of life among the Palestinian population due to ongoing Israeli strikes. The legal experts, including former Supreme Court justices, assert that "genocide is being perpetrated" against the people of Gaza due to both military offensives and a sustained blockade that restricts essential supplies, such as food and medical aid.

Israel has categorically dismissed accusations of genocide, and such claims are currently under review by the International Court of Justice. In response to escalating international criticism, including a joint condemnation from the UK, France, and Canada regarding Israel's military expansion, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argued that these countries were siding with Hamas, maintaining that the operation is aimed at rescuing hostages taken during an unprecedented attack.

The letter from the legal professionals marks the latest in a series of communications directed at the UK government since hostilities began in October 2023.
