Zelensky's Berlin Visit Strengthens Ukraine-Germany Ties Amidst Ongoing War

In the wake of shifting geopolitical dynamics, including dwindling U.S. support, the meeting aims to solidify military aid to Ukraine and establish Germany's leadership role in Europe.

In a significant meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit Berlin to meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This encounter marks their third meeting within a span of three weeks, highlighting Merz's commitment to addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This effort indicates Germany's renewed desire to solidify its leadership role among European allies, particularly amid growing concerns over the diminishing support from the United States for NATO.

During the visit, discussions are anticipated to center around military aid, a crucial aspect considering the significant role the U.S. plays as Ukraine's largest donor. A focal point of negotiation is expected to be Germany's long-range Taurus missile system, developed in collaboration with Sweden, which Zelensky has shown interest in procuring.

The Ukrainian president will undertake his discussions at the Chancellery, Germany’s executive office, followed by a joint news conference with Merz. In addition to his meeting with the Chancellor, Zelensky is scheduled to meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue, the presidential palace.

Merz's welcoming approach towards Zelensky stands in stark contrast to the initial reservations exhibited by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who delayed his visit to Ukraine until a year after the onset of the Russian invasion. Merz wasted no time in showcasing his support for Ukraine, having visited the country just three days after his swearing-in alongside Jewish and Polish leaders.

Underscoring the importance of these discussions, Merz has stated that the stability of the European continent hangs in the balance. In his inaugural parliamentary address, he affirmed his commitment, asserting, "In Ukraine, nothing less than the peace order of our entire continent is at stake.
