Ghana's Economic Struggles: From Accountancy to Mechanics Ahead of Elections

As Ghanaians head to the polls amid economic turmoil, a former accountant reflects on his disillusionment with the current state of affairs and the looming elections.

Amid mounting economic hardships, primarily driven by a significant crisis since 2022, the impending presidential and parliamentary elections have become a focal point for Ghanaians.

Nathaniel Qainoo, a 29-year-old accountant turned mechanic, exemplifies the frustration felt by many in Ghana. Struggling to find work in his field since graduating five years ago, Qainoo has turned to repairing cars in Kassoa, just 30km from Accra. In a conversation with the BBC, he underscored the pervasive sense of hardship that has dominated Ghanaian life following a severe economic downturn marked by debt defaults, credit downgrades, and soaring inflation rates peaking at 54%.

Qainoo, like many young people making up nearly 40% of Ghana's population, sees limited job prospects and expresses a desire to emigrate for a better life. "I would like to leave the country, go outside, live better, work harder," he stated. This sentiment echoes a broader trend as young individuals contemplate leaving in search of opportunities abroad.

The economic crisis has pushed forward the urgency of the election, where former President John Mahama and Mahamudu Bawumia from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) vie for leadership. Bawumia, currently Vice President and a prominent figure in the economic management team, faces challenges due to the unfavorable economic conditions. Despite his academic credentials, he has struggled to shake off the criticism related to the economic downturn, once even being ridiculed for his leadership during a tumultuous period.

On the trail, Bawumia attempts to rebrand himself, distancing from past administration failures while promoting a digital economy and job creation as key pillars of his campaign. Meanwhile, Mahama aims to "reset" Ghana's faltering economy, positioning himself as a capable leader who can navigate the crisis effectively.

With both candidates advocating for a reduction in taxes amid increased living costs, economic analysts have expressed skepticism over how these commitments can be reconciled with the IMF-backed fiscal adjustments, indicating deeper complexities within their proposals.

Polling suggests a competitive race. Mahama holds a slight edge, yet analysts caution about potential run-off scenarios if neither reaches the necessary majority. The dynamics of this election encapsulate the urgent desire for change amidst Ghana's ongoing economic struggles and the ongoing hope for a stable democratic transition.

As Ghanaians prepare to vote, the voices of people like Qainoo reflect a critical narrative—one rooted in the intertwined realities of employment, economic policy, and the broader aspirations of the populace toward a more stable future.

The outcome of the election remains pivotal, not only for the political landscape but for the material conditions of lives within Ghana.
