Nora Aunor, one of the Philippines' most celebrated film stars, has died at the age of 71. Her death on Wednesday was announced by her children on social media, though details regarding the cause of death remain undisclosed. "She touched generations with her unmatched talent, grace, and passion for the craft. Her voice, presence, and artistry shaped a legacy that will never fade," expressed her daughter and fellow actor Lotlot de Leon on Instagram.
Born into humble beginnings in Iriga City, Aunor enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over seven decades in television, music, and film. In 2022, she was recognized as National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, the highest accolade for artistic achievement in the Philippines. Aunor rose to prominence as a singer in the 1960s and later transitioned to acting, earning over 200 credits in both film and television.
Among her most iconic performances was her role in the 1995 film The Flor Contemplacion Story, which depicted the tragic tale of a Filipino maid executed in Singapore for murder. This role, alongside many others, garnered her numerous national and international acting awards.
In 2013, Aunor won the Best Actress award at the 7th Asian Film Awards for her performance in Thy Womb. She was married to fellow actor Christopher de Leon from 1975 until 1996, and together they had five children.
