Unexploded World War II Bomb Causes Major Disruption at Paris's Gare du Nord
Authorities in Paris faced significant challenges as train services were halted due to the discovery of an unexploded bomb from World War II near a busy transit hub.
On Friday, the Gare du Nord, one of France’s busiest train stations, faced significant disruptions after an unexploded World War II bomb was found just north of Paris, specifically in the Saint-Denis suburb. This situation led to halted train traffic for several hours as authorities engaged mine-sweeping teams to handle the potentially dangerous device. The disruption impacted high-speed and commuter rail lines, including Eurostar services that connect France with Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands, leaving many passengers stranded at the station, known to have served over 226 million travelers in 2023.
France’s national railway company confirmed that train services to and from Gare du Nord were suspended at the request of Paris police, adding that the situation necessitated an immediate and careful response. Philippe Tabarot, France’s transportation minister, reassured the public on Sud Radio that there was “no cause for alarm,” although he noted that precautions were being taken to ensure the bomb's safe removal. He anticipated ongoing disruptions for the remainder of the day.
The nature and specifics surrounding the bomb's discovery remain unclear at this time. It’s not unusual in Europe for construction activities to uncover unexploded ordnance from previous conflicts; however, locating such devices in populous urban areas is less common. Notably, similar discoveries have occurred in the past, including last month in northern England, where over 175 practice bombs were found beneath a playground. In 2018, Berlin experienced a significant evacuation when a large WWII bomb was uncovered.
The incident underscored the ongoing legacy of World War II in Europe, where unexploded bombs continue to pose a risk and highlight the importance of safety protocols during urban construction and infrastructure projects.
