Katy Perry Joins All-Women Space Flight Mission on Blue Origin
Pop star Katy Perry to participate in groundbreaking space mission along with prominent women leaders.
Pop icon Katy Perry is slated to embark on a historic journey into space as a part of an all-female crew aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket, a mission that marks a significant moment in space exploration. Scheduled for spring, the event will feature a lineup of influential women including Lauren Sanchez, fiancé of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, CBS host Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
This flight notably commemorates the first exclusively female crew to reach space since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's solo mission in 1963, as highlighted by Blue Origin. Although the specific launch date is yet to be announced, Perry's participation is expected to occur before her Lifetimes Tour, set to run from April 23 to November 11.
In a statement, Perry expressed her excitement about being part of such a groundbreaking mission: “If you had told me I'd be part of the first all-female crew in space, I would have believed you. Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child.” This journey, designated as the NS-31 mission, will be the 11th human spaceflight for the New Shepard rocket and its 31st overall flight, with the program previously having successfully launched 52 individuals into space.
Blue Origin has noted the significant role played by Lauren Sanchez in organizing the mission, with the press release stating that she is "honored to lead a team of explorers" in confronting their perspectives of Earth while inspiring future generations. Sanchez originally unveiled her intentions for an all-female crew in a 2023 Vogue interview, emphasizing the aim to "pave the way for women."
Celebrities are increasingly becoming involved in space tourism, following in the footsteps of other notable figures such as Jeff Bezos, who participated in the company's inaugural manned mission in 2021, and celebrities like Michael Strahan and William Shatner. Notably absent from this trend, however, is Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, who has yet to take his own journey to space.
This upcoming mission not only aims to break barriers in space exploration but also sparks discussions about the growing trend of space tourism and women’s representation in science and technology.
