India and China Reach Agreement to Resume Direct Flights After Long Hiatus

The resumption of flights signals a positive shift in diplomatic relations between the two nations following recent tensions.

Recent diplomatic gestures suggest a move towards improved relations as both countries work to mend ties after significant conflict.

India and China have officially decided to resume direct flights between their nations after a suspension that lasted nearly five years. This decision reflects a thaw in the historically strained relations between the two Asian powerhouses, which had faced severe tensions due to a border dispute that escalated into deadly skirmishes in the Himalayas in 2020.

The agreement was part of a broader understanding announced after Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's visit to Beijing, which focused on various collaboration efforts between the two countries. In addition to the flight resumption, the discussions included enhancing journalist access and facilitating Hindu pilgrimages to Tibet, marking a noteworthy shift towards cooperation.

The relationship between India and China has deteriorated significantly over the past few years, particularly following a 2020 incident when Chinese troops crossed into Indian territory, leading to confrontations that resulted in fatalities on both sides. Both sides have taken cautious steps to restore normalcy through high-level talks, including an October meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which was their first substantial discussion in five years.

In the latest diplomatic engagement, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed the need for both nations to embrace this moment as an opportunity to bridge gaps and reduce suspicions. He urged them to work together to overcome the historical hurdles affecting their interactions.

India's Foreign Ministry emphasized that discussions regarding the logistical details of resuming flights would take place among officials from both governments in the near future. While flights to Hong Kong had resumed earlier following the Covid-19 pandemic, direct flights to mainland China remained suspended due to ongoing diplomatic tensions.

This renewed initiative for dialogue marks a significant step towards stabilizing the relationship between the two countries, bringing hope for a peaceful resolution to their outstanding issues. As both nations continue to engage in constructive dialogue, they aim to foster a climate of mutual trust and collaboration.
