Musk's Congratulatory Call Sparks Mixed Reactions Following AfD's Election Performance

Elon Musk's call to congratulate the leader of Germany's far-right party after their significant election performance has raised eyebrows and prompted discussions about foreign influence in domestic politics.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party's recent electoral success, where it garnered 20.8% of the vote, was marked by a congratulatory phone call from Elon Musk to its leader, Alice Weidel. This performance, while historically significant, has also underscored the party's continued marginalization by other political factions, sparking debates on the implications of foreign endorsements in domestic political landscapes.

In a development that has stirred both support and concern, Alice Weidel, chancellor candidate for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), revealed on Monday that she received a congratulatory phone call from billionaire Elon Musk following her party's notable second-place finish in the national elections. The AfD, which secured 20.8% of the vote, marking nearly double its 2021 share, still faces coalition rejection from mainstream parties, notably the Christian Democrats led by Friedrich Merz.

Weidel noted that she discovered the missed call from Musk the morning after the election, after which Musk reiterated his congratulations publicly via X, the social media platform he owns. He also shared a supportive remark from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, predicting the AfD's potential to become the majority party in future elections.

Although the AfD's performance is the best for a far-right party in Germany since World War II, it has drawn criticism due to parts of the party being designated as extremist by German intelligence. Nonetheless, prominent U.S. politicians, including Vice President JD Vance, have expressed a willingness to engage with the party, suggesting that far-right factions should not be entirely excluded from political dialogue.

Musk's previous endorsements and public appearances, including a video conversation and a call to rally attendees during a party meeting, have positioned him as a controversial figure influencing discussions on German politics. Critics have noted the unusual nature of a U.S. national and business leader weighing in on foreign elections, particularly with sentiments that challenge Germany's historical context regarding guilt from past atrocities.

Despite Musk's efforts to rally support for the AfD, party leaders themselves have downplayed the potential impact of his involvement. Co-leader Tino Chrupalla acknowledged that while Musk might not significantly influence voter sentiment, his endorsement has attracted interest and financial support from certain business sectors.

The divergence in opinions surrounding Musk's support reflects broader societal divides on how far-right parties like the AfD are perceived and integrated into Germany's political landscape.
