Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has made a successful recovery following emergency surgery for a brain bleed and has been discharged from the Sírio-Libanês hospital in São Paulo. The 79-year-old president, who appeared at a press briefing with his medical team, expressed his thanks to God and the public for their support during his recovery.
Lula was hospitalized after complaining of a severe headache after sustaining a blow to the head due to a fall in his bathroom back in October. Doctors conducted a craniotomy to treat the intracranial hemorrhage, a procedure that involves removing part of the skull and later replacing it. Fortunately, the doctors indicated that Lula did not suffer any lasting brain injury and was recovering well.
During the press conference, Lula emphasized the importance of positivity, stating, “Thank you very much for the prayers... for those who only have hate, you’re forgiven.” He also indicated that he is eager to return to work. With the president's health now stable and no adverse effects reported from the surgery, medical professionals expect him to resume his duties in Brasília as early as next week.
Lula’s condition allowed Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin to assume some responsibilities during his hospitalization. The president's fall, which required five stitches, has highlighted the potential for late-onset issues from head injuries, as noted by his doctors.
Since taking office in January 2023 after a closely contested election against former President Jair Bolsonaro, Lula has shown resilience, often joking about his youthful energy during the campaign. His recent health scare and subsequent recovery may impact his leadership trajectory as he continues to navigate his presidency amidst Brazil's political landscape.
