Poland Accuses Russia of Orchestrating Massive Shopping Center Fire Through Social Media Recruitment

Poland's top diplomat has accused Russia of employing covert tactics to orchestrate a significant fire in Warsaw's shopping center, triggering diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

Poland's escalating allegations against Russia reveal a new level of intensity in their diplomatic relations. In a recent interview, Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski claimed that Moscow recruited arsonists via the Telegram messaging platform for a major fire incident at the Marywilska shopping center last May. He categorized the act as part of Russia's hybrid warfare strategy, a term describing covert actions meant to destabilize target nations without overt military engagement.

The destruction caused by the fire was extensive, costing the livelihoods of 1,400 small businesses, particularly affecting Warsaw's Vietnamese community. The Polish investigation, as per Sikorski's statement, concluded that the Russian intelligence services orchestrated the arson, marking a significant escalation in accusations against Moscow since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

In response to the allegations, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refuted claims of Russian involvement, branding them as "baseless" and indicative of Poland's "Russophobic" tendencies. He characterized Poland’s decision to close a Russian consulate in Krakow in reaction to these claims as an extension of uncooperative diplomatic relations.
